20.9 million users in Germany alone – TikTok is growing rapidly. Now, the social media platform dares to take the next step from a mere entertainment channel to a full-fledged e-commerce platform. What does this mean for companies and online trading? What benefits does TikTok Shop provide and what are the challenges?

TikTok Shop: from hype to shopping platform
Digitization changes the purchasing behavior. Classical e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or Shopify dominate the market.
However, social media platforms as well are relying on a new strategy: social commerce. TikTok wants to be a pioneer in this field. This is why the provider integrates a seamless shopping experience directly into the app: TikTok Shop.
Previously, the purchasing process started in an external online store or via a website: the user clicked a product display and was forwarded to the merchant. Now, TikTok Shop enables direct purchasing within the platform. As a result, TikTok becomes a competitor for classical e-commerce platforms.
Business Center, Creator Marketplace & Co.: How does TikTok Shop work?
The new shopping experience is based on a direct link between influencer marketing, short videos and a simple purchasing process. Products are no longer placed in advertisements or the profile of a merchant only. They appear directly in the feed or the new shopping tab.
Companies manage their products and sales via TikTok Seller Center. TikTok Business Center provides a central management platform for advertisements and campaigns. TikTok Creator Marketplace enables brands to specifically select creators promoting their products. Companies also use shop ads to specifically address customers.
However, the main change is the checkout process itself. Customers no longer exit the platform but complete the entire ordering process directly in the TikTok app. Payment is also made within the app. Personal data is already stored and the checkout process is reduced to a few clicks.
Watch out, Amazon! Marketplaces versus social commerce – What are the differences?
Classical marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay rely on customers actively searching for a product, making comparisons and completing a purchase. TikTok Shop works according to a completely different principle.
It focuses on entertainment and inspiration. Products are promoted by using short videos, creative contents and influencer recommendations, which often triggers a spontaneous buying impulse.
The crucial difference lies in the purchasing behavior of the users. Amazon users mostly logon anonymously, search for a specific product and only enter personal data during checkout. TikTok users in turn logon with their name, e-mail address and date of birth.
If TikTok Shop is used, payment data is often stored once. This enormously accelerates the purchasing process: with just a few clicks, the purchase order is completed and the product on its way to the customer.
Classical e-commerce platforms rely on comprehensive product descriptions, detailed comparisons and user ratings. The TikTok shopping experience is more emotional and impulsive.
The products are not selected according to the best price performance but according to trends, popularity and the effect of influencers on customers. The cooperation with TikTok influencers is a new option for increasing the awareness of brands.
Chances and risks: Is TikTok Shop the future of online trading?
The advantages for companies are obvious: with over 20 million users in Germany, TikTok offers an enormous reach. Young target groups in particular use Google ever more rarely to search for products. Instead, they use social media apps where they can be contacted directly.
The use of influencers creates a bond of trust between brand and consumers, which significantly increases consumer acceptance. Moreover, products can be spread virally within a very short time, which may increase the sales volume. Especially during the initial phase, companies can benefit from being an “early adopter” since the number of competitors is still relatively low.
However, there are also challenges. Data protection plays a major role as TikTok user data is saved on servers outside Europe. The compliance with GDPR provisions may be an obstacle for companies. Above all, this concerns companies that must comply with the European data protection directives.
Moreover, not every product is suitable for TikTok Shop. Particularly complex or consulting-consuming products can hardly be described in short videos. Moreover, there are restrictions concerning the sellable articles: medical products, for instance, must not be advertised or sold.
The functionality of the TikTok algorithm may also be a challenge. On classical e-commerce platforms, companies systematically create visibility through SEO and paid advertisement. However, the reach of a TikTok product strongly depends on the algorithm. Competing products might preferably be displayed while other products are “lost”.
SAP & TikTok: How can TikTok Shop be efficiently integrated into SAP using FIS/TradeFlex?
TikTok provides merchants with enormous chances. However, being successful in social commerce does not only depend on reach and trends. The smooth integration into existing IT systems is a crucial factor. Those who minimize manual processes and automate them secure themselves a real competitive advantage.
This is where FIS/TradeFlex comes into play. The middleware seamlessly connects TikTok Shop with SAP. It synchronizes purchase orders as well as quotations in real time and keeps the prices and quantities offered congruent with the ERP system. Payment clearing documents as well are processed automatically and open items cleared directly in SAP.
Especially merchants who do business on several marketplaces benefit from central controlling. FIS/TradeFlex does not only integrate TikTok Shop but also Amazon, eBay and many more marketplaces for an efficient and scalable sales strategy.
Conclusion: Is TikTok Shop the future?
TikTok Shop Germany is still in its infancy. However, the course for revolutionizing online trading has been set. Social commerce will not replace classical e-commerce but strongly influence it. Companies following this trend at an early stage can secure themselves a decisive advantage. The integration of social media, shopping and direct checkout makes the shopping experience more convenient and more emotional than ever before.
It remains to be seen whether TikTok Shop can hold its ground against established marketplaces in the long run. However, one thing is sure: Who wants to be a successful seller today should not ignore social commerce. While classical online stores expect customers to actively search for a product, TikTok brings the products directly to the right target group – packed in entertaining and inspiring contents.
