What are the functions of SAP Business Suite?

SAP Business Suite supports companies in centrally controlling and optimizing their core processes. It unites all essential business areas – from finance, purchasing and production to sales and distribution, service and human resources – in one consistent system landscape.

The central functions include

  • the integration of processes across departmental boundaries,
  • the use of consolidated real-time data as well as
  • the automation of recurring tasks through artificial intelligence.

The cloud-based architecture standardizes processes and makes them flexibly adjustable at the same time. As a result, business models can be extended more quickly, decisions can be made on a data basis and resources can be used more efficiently.

In this way, the suite creates the basis for transparent, automated and scalable business processes – irrespective of company size or industry.

How is SAP Business Suite structured?

To make digital transformation successful, SAP Business Suite relies on four central components. These interact directly with each other and create a platform that is operationally efficient, data-driven, intelligent and open.

What roles do the four SAP Business Suite components play?

SAP Cloud ERP – the core of the suite and the central application for business processes

SAP Cloud ERP (previously known as SAP S/4HANA Cloud) is the operational backbone of SAP Business Suite. As an advanced and modular Cloud-ERP solution, it covers all essential business processes – from Financial Accounting, purchasing and production, supply chain and sales and distribution to human resources and customer experience.

SAP Cloud ERP is available both in the public cloud and the private cloud. Public Cloud Edition enables a quick implementation based on standardized processes and offers predefined industry packages. Private Cloud Edition addresses companies with complex or highly individualized requirements and enables far-reaching adjustments.

Irrespective of the selected operating mode, companies will benefit from high-performance data processing in real time based on the SAP HANA technology, which enables quick analyses and efficient process control. Together with integrated artificial intelligence and configurable packages, SAP Cloud ERP assists companies in controlling their processes efficiently, remaining agile and consistently promoting innovations.

The combination of SAP Business Network and Integrated Toolchain by SAP Signavio creates a scalable and future-proof platform that accelerates digital transformation and forms the basis for efficiency, transparency and automation.

SAP Business AI – intelligent automation and decision-making support

SAP Business AI is the central AI view in the SAP landscape. It integrates generative AI, intelligent agents based on it as well as functions directly embedded in business processes. As a result, processes are automated, well-founded decisions supported and precise forecasts enabled, which increases efficiency, transparency and productivity.

The focus here is on the generative SAP Joule AI agent, which has already been integrated into many SAP applications. Joule enables the processing of tasks through interactions in natural language. Companies will benefit from proactive recommendations, automated workflows and data-based analyses that are seamlessly integrated into the daily routine.

The technical basis is the real-time data processing based on the high-performance SAP HANA technology. It enables quick data analyses and dynamic process control. The SAP Knowledge Graph tool is used by SAP to ensure a reliable data basis within the business context.

SAP Business AI is designed to grow continuously:
More than 400 AI scenarios are planned by the end of 2025. In addition, SAP Business AI will also be integrated into third-party applications, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot. Here, SAP pursues an agent-based approach: AI does not only react but acts actively and, in this way, contributes to improved decision quality, higher productivity and more sustainable enterprise management.

SAP Business Data Cloud – central data platform for well-founded decisions

SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) is the central data platform of SAP Business Suite. It consolidates structured and unstructured data from SAP and third-party systems, harmonizes it semantically and makes it usable for applications, analyses and AI. As a result, a standardized and company-wide data basis is created that overcomes data silos and enables data-driven decisions in real time.

Based on this consolidated data, BDC provides preconfigured data products that make data available in consistent quality and with technical context – the basis for analyses, automations and AI scenarios.

Building on this, intelligent apps such as Finance Intelligence, Spend Intelligence, Customer Intelligence or People Intelligence provide user departments with self-service access to relevant insights. In this way, decisions can be made quickly and independently without being dependent on IT resources.

The combination of seamless integrations into the SAP ecosystem as well as into partner solutions such as Databricks or Palantir creates a 360 degree view of processes and customers, which is transparent, efficient and scalable.

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP): the technological basis of the suite

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) is the technological backbone of SAP Business Suite. As an open platform for the integration, extension and automation of business applications, it enables companies to make their processes flexible and optimize them continuously.

Individual applications can be developed, existing systems – no matter whether on-premises or in the cloud – integrated seamlessly and business processes automated in a safe way. BTP creates a standardized technological basis for innovations, data analyses and intelligent process control.

Announcement

2005 (implementation ECC 6.0)

2025 (SAPPHIRE 2025 keynote)

SAP has renamed its previous Cloud ERP offers to position the solutions more clearly and comprehensible. “SAP Cloud ERP” is the new name for the solution previously known as “SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition”. Likewise, “SAP Cloud ERP Private” stands for “SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition”.

Functionally, it is the same advanced Cloud ERP solutions that are based on the SAP HANA in-memory platform and that offer real-time data processing, AI integration and flexible scalability. This renaming is to facilitate the distinction between the public cloud variant (“SAP Cloud ERP”) and the private cloud variant (“SAP Cloud ERP Private”) and strengthen SAP’s cloud strategy.

In short: SAP Cloud ERP is the new simplified name for the previous SAP S/4HANA Cloud editions; technically and functionally, everything remains unchanged.

The Lines of Business (LoBs) in SAP Business Suite 2025 are process-oriented business fields bundling central corporate functions and enabling a modern and integrated view of business processes. These LoBs include areas such as finance, production, sales and distribution, service, supply chain, sourcing & procurement (purchasing & procurement), human resources, asset management, marketing, commerce and sustainability. They support companies with flexible modular solutions and innovative technologies, such as AI and cloud.

In contrast to the classical SAP Business Suite 7 solution consisting of functionally separated modules such as FI (Financial Accounting), CO (Controlling), MM (Materials Management) and SD (Sales & Distribution), the LoBs are designed for consistent end-to-end processes. They are based on further developments of the previous SAP S/4HANA Cloud and on-premises solutions and were completed by cloud-native technologies, AI functions and flexible enhancement options – for increased scalability, integration and sustainability.

In the past, RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP (now: SAP GROW) were packages for the initial access to the cloud, both being clearly assigned either to the private or the public cloud solution. Companies could select one of the two packages that included specific Cloud ERP solutions, services and migration tools.

Since 2025, SAP has positioned these offers as “journeys”, i.e. individual ways into the cloud. These “journeys” are no inflexible packages but flexible transformation experiences that are adjusted to the needs, requirements and initial situations of companies. It is no longer mandatory to exclusively connect RISE with the private cloud solution and GROW with the public cloud solution. The strict separation between RISE (private cloud) and GROW (public cloud) no longer exists.

SAP Business Suite 2025 is offered as a Cloud ERP solution in a subscription model. The costs depend on the number of users, the selected module packages and optional services such as enhancements or support. Companies can use the modular architecture to adjust the packages flexibly to their user departments (e.g. finance, HR, supply chain) and design the costs in a scalable manner.

Usually, the license fees are charged per user on a monthly basis and the cloud solution already includes maintenance, updates and infrastructure. This means that separate investments into hardware or system maintenance are eliminated. As pricing and scope strongly depend on individual requirements and company sizes, SAP recommends personal consulting to obtain a transparent and tailored calculation.

PUPM stands for “Per User Per Month” and describes a user-based license model that charges the costs per user on a monthly basis. Companies only pay for user licenses they really use. This ensures high flexibility and cost control, in particular in case of seasonal fluctuations or corporate growth. The prices are transparent and easy scaling is possible as licenses can be added or reduced flexibly.

Maintenance, updates and infrastructure are included in the model, which reduces administration efforts and eliminates investments into individual hardware.
