What is SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW)?

SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) – often simply called “Business Warehouse” or “BW” – is the central SAP Data Warehouse (SAP DW) for enterprises. It is used to collect and structure large amounts of data from different sources (e.g. SAP ERP modules, external databases, cloud applications) and format them for Business Intelligence purposes, reports and analyses. SAP BW was originally implemented as SAP Business Information Warehouse and represents the back-end system of the SAP reporting solution.

Enterprise Data Warehouse

SAP BW maps a company’s Enterprise Data Warehouse. This means that it acts as the central system where company-wide data is harmonized. In this way, enterprises create a single source of truth for evaluations and strategic decisions. Thanks to OLAP technology (Online Analytical Processing), users can analyze data in BW from different perspectives, create data models and carry out ad hoc evaluations.

History and platform

Classic SAP BW systems used to run on the SAP NetWeaver basis and different databases. With the occurrence of SAP HANA as an in-memory database, BW was first migrated to HANA (SAP BW on HANA or BW on HANA). Currently, SAP BW/4HANA is the latest version of the BW product line. BW/4HANA was newly developed to provide optimized solution approaches for the HANA database.

How do SAP BW reporting and analysis work?

SAP BW provides comprehensive reporting and analysis functions to extract decision-ready information from raw data. The core of BW reporting is the OLAP Processor that includes functions such as aggregation, drilldown or filter options. In general, users access the data via predefined BEx queries (Business Explorer queries). A BEx query is a query concerning the BW data model, which contains defined key figures, characteristics and filters. It serves as a recommended data source for reports as economic logistics, calculations and authorizations are centrally defined here. BEx queries as data sources provide consistent results and complex calculations are defined here once to ensure that they are available at a central point whenever they are called.

Front-end tools

For analyzing SAP BW data, different SAP BW front-end tools are available. Classically, SAP BW Business Explorer (BEx) is used, which includes tools such as BEx Analyzer (Excel add-in) and BEx Web Application Designer. However, these tools are already outside the SAP maintenance period and have been replaced by successor tools such as Eclipse Query Designer or Analysis-for-Office (Afo) in Excel.

Nowadays, more advanced options are available for integration with other BI tools:

  • SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC): Cloud tool for reporting and planning, which can directly access BW data models via live data connections.
  • SAP BusinessObjects (Web Intelligence, Crystal Reports): They can access BW data via universal data connections or directly via BW query.
  • Microsoft Power BI and Excel: Via specific interfaces (e.g. OLAP connector, ODBC/OLE DB for OLAP) or the PowerBI SAP BW Connector, BW data can be integrated into Power BI or Excel Power Query.
  • Other tools: Third-party tools such as Tableau can also connect BW data via open interfaces. In recent times, cloud data platforms such as Snowflake are connected as well; here, however, performance and SAP BW security (authorizations) play a role, which has to be considered.

Reports and evaluations

With SAP BW, users can create interactive reports and evaluations. By using BW queries, they benefit from SAP BW Best Practices such as variables (parameter entries), hierarchical structures and predefined key figures.

This supports business process-oriented analyses – e.g. evaluation of sales volume data, stock levels or financial key figures – and helps make well-founded decisions. Thanks to SAP HANA reporting (in-memory technology), even large datasets can quickly be browsed and analyzed in BW, which significantly increases the reporting performance.

How is the SAP BW architecture structured?

The SAP BW architecture is multilayered (in several levels) and includes different components and functions:

Data integration (ETL)

SAP BW has integrated ETL functionalities (SAP BW ETL for extraction, transformation, loading). Via data sources and “extractors”, data is extracted from source systems (SAP and non-SAP). This data is formatted in staging areas and then loaded into BW. The integration supports batch processes (regular loading processes) as well as real-time concepts such as ODP (Operational Data Provisioning) for live data replication.

Data modeling and storage

In SAP BW, data is organized in InfoProviders. InfoCubes (multi-dimensional cubes, i.e. SAP BW cubes) and DataStore objects (DSO) used to be typical data stores. In advanced BW systems (BW on HANA, BW/4HANA), Advanced DSOs (ADSOs) are used instead of classic InfoCubes. Via the Data Warehousing Workbench or BW Modeling Tools (Eclipse), data models are designed, info objects (characteristics, key figures) defined and relations established. Good SAP BW Modeling follows SAP BW Best Practices (e.g. Layered Scalable Architecture principles) to efficiently handle large data volumes.

OLAP layer

The OLAP layer lies above physical data retention. The SAP BW OLAP Processor enables complex analyses and calculations based on the data. Here, hierarchies, key figure formulas, currency conversions and specific OLAP functions are implemented. This layer provides the data for the front-end tools via BW queries or open interfaces.

Authorizations and security

SAP BW includes an individual authorization concept (SAP BW Authorization Objects). Administrators can control in detail which user is allowed to see specific data (e.g. according to region, division, period of time). In addition to authorization management, SAP BW administration includes monitoring, transport system (movement of objects between development, test and production systems) and performance tuning.

Operation and monitoring

A BW system requires continuous monitoring. By means of administration tools, loading processes (process chains), system utilization and query performance are monitored. SAP BW monitoring and optimization (e.g. indexing in classic systems or HANA-optimized data retention in new systems) are essential tasks for stable operation. Here, experienced SAP BW consultants frequently come into play to provide support for system optimization or SAP BW training for the internal team. SAP BW ABAP Programming (BW coding for enhancing the loading logic) is also used in the SAP BW back end to implement customer-specific routines in ETL processes for instance.

This holistic architecture makes SAP BW a solid data management tool. Enterprises can use it to merge data from different applications and business processes. The use of a dedicated data warehouse solution increases data consistency and the uniformity of information in enterprises.

What is meant by SAP BW on HANA and SAP BW/4HANA?

SAP BW was technically further developed over the years, particularly due to ever-increasing data volumes. Before the HANA database was available, users managed with “aggregates” or a business accelerator, which already held data in memory.

In the context of implementing SAP HANA as a database, the new BW/4HANA software solution was developed in addition to BW on HANA.

What is meant by SAP BW on HANA?

SAP BW on HANA means that a classic SAP BW system (e.g. BW 7.5) is used on the SAP HANA database. Here, BW runs in the usual architecture but uses HANA as a high-performing in-memory platform.

The benefits of BW on HANA (SAP BW on HANA) are, in particular, its celerity and simplifications such as the option of providing data models as HANA views. To a great extent, the SAP BW on HANA architecture remains unchanged here. Many enterprises have taken the “BW on HANA” way to accelerate existing BW systems. The “BW on HANA” migration was an important step in numerous roadmaps. For SAP BW on HANA, SAP guidelines (an SAP BW on HANA roadmap), tutorials as well as certifications (SAP BW on HANA Certification) were available to facilitate this changeover.

What is meant by SAP BW/4HANA?

BW/4HANA (frequently also written as “SAP BW 4HANA”) is the new generation of Business Warehouse, which was implemented in 2016. It is an independent product that exclusively runs on SAP HANA and has fundamentally modernized the BW software.

What is the difference between BW 4HANA and BW on HANA?

BW/4HANA does without “legacies” (numerous classic BW objects have been removed) and offers simplified architecture. Modeling exclusively takes place in the new BW Modeling Tools. Furthermore, BW/4HANA can better be integrated into cloud scenarios.

For enterprises, the following question frequently arises: SAP BW vs. SAP BW/4HANA – where are the differences?

In short:

  • Technology: BW/4HANA has natively been optimized for HANA; older BW versions were also able to run on other databases (before HANA was implemented).
  • Simplification: Numerous object types have been merged or simplified. ADSOs, for instance, replace former InfoCubes and DSOs to a great extent, CompositeProviders replace MultiProviders etc., which results in leaner modeling.
  • Functionality: BW/4HANA has enhanced options for joining multiple data sources. Another roadmap is available here, where new functions are developed and made available in future releases.
  • Future security: SAP has made it clear that innovations in the data warehouse area will only take place in BW/4HANA in the future. Older BW versions (7.x) are in maintenance mode.

Enterprises still using classic BW are increasingly planning an SAP BW 4HANA conversion in their old BW system or an SAP BW 4HANA migration to a new system environment. For this purpose, SAP offers tools and training materials (e.g. an SAP BW 4HANA tutorial) to facilitate the changeover.

Important to know:

SAP BW/4HANA will be supported in the long run (currently at least until 2040), whereas classic BW 7.5 will only be maintained until 2027 (mainstream support) or 2030 (extended support).

Currently, BW/4HANA is still the strategic solution for on-premise systems, whereas SAP Datasphere or Business Data Cloud are strategic solutions in the cloud.

Which advanced alternatives or supplements to SAP BW are available?

The IT world constantly develops further – and therefore, new data management offers have established themselves in addition to SAP BW. Decision-makers should know the following solutions and products that are able to supplement or perspectively replace SAP BW:

  • SAP Datasphere (former SAP Data Warehouse Cloud)
  • SAP Business Data Cloud
  • SAP Cloud ERP or SAP S/4HANA On-Premise (Embedded Analytics)
  • SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)
  • Third-party data warehouse applications
  • SAP BW vs. SAP HANA Native Modeling

SAP Datasphere (former SAP Data Warehouse Cloud)

SAP Datasphere is a cloud computing offer by SAP for data warehousing in the public cloud model, which runs as software-as-a-service on SAP Business Technology Platform. Datasphere enables the integration of SAP and non-SAP data in the cloud, self-service data modeling and the integration of AI-supported analyses.

With SAP BW Bridge, SAP provides an option of making further use of existing BW models in Datasphere. It can be used to transfer BW systems into the cloud step by step (hybrid scenario) but without the “Composite Provider” and “BW Queries” components. A comparison between SAP BW and SAP Datasphere shows that Datasphere is particularly flexible for new requirements, whereas BW uses established on-premise structures.

SAP Business Data Cloud

In 2025, SAP announced Business Data Cloud – a further development of the data strategy. SAP Business Data Cloud combines the strengths of SAP Datasphere, SAP BW and third-party platforms (e.g. Databricks) in an open data environment. The aim is to merge live data from different systems and optimally provide it for analytics and AI. For BW customers, this means an even closer interconnection of on-premise data (via BW Private Cloud Edition) with cloud-based services.

SAP Cloud ERP or SAP S/4HANA On-Premise (Embedded Analytics)

Many entrepreneurs wonder whether they additionally require BW when implementing SAP Cloud ERP or SAP S/4HANA On-Premise. SAP Cloud ERP and SAP S/4HANA On-Premise include embedded analyses and preconfigured reports. They are based on live data in the public/private cloud or in the HANA database of S/4 (e.g. CDS views, Fiori Analytical Apps) and are suitable for operational reporting directly in the business process.

However, these ERP solutions do not replace the need for an Enterprise Data Warehouse: If data from different enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, external sources) is to be evaluated over longer periods of time, a BW system or its successor will remain useful.

SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

SAP Analytics Cloud is no data warehouse but a BI and planning software in the cloud. It is frequently used as a supplement – e.g. as a reporting front end for BW/4HANA or Datasphere. The BW system can be connected live to SAC so that evaluations in SAC always show the most updated data. In comparison between SAP BW and SAP Analytics Cloud, the following applies: BW provides data and logistics, SAC visualizes and enables self-service analyses. Decision-makers often use SAC to create dashboards and what-if analyses based on the data consolidated in BW.

Third-party data warehouse applications

Apart from SAP, cloud DWH solutions such as Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery or Databricks Lakehouse are available. Some enterprises consider migrating their data warehouse to such platforms. A comparison that is frequently discussed is SAP Data Warehouse Cloud vs. Snowflake or generally SAP BW vs. Snowflake. Snowflake scores with easy scalability, a pure cloud service model and broad connection. SAP BW, however, provides a deep integration in SAP source systems and predefined contents (Business Content). The integration of SAP data in Snowflake requires additional tools and know-how, whereas SAP’s individual solutions have advantages here. In the end, the choice depends on the existing system landscapes, the business processes and the strategic orientation (SAP Stack vs. best-of-breed).

SAP BW vs. SAP HANA Native Modeling

Another frequently discussed question is SAP BW vs HANA: Some enterprises consider doing without a separate BW system and instead building data models and views for analytics directly on the SAP HANA database (e.g. HANA in S/4HANA). A separate BW system natively uses the SAP HANA Data Warehouse abilities. HANA offers enormous celerity and can be used as an SAP reporting system via calculation views, but some BW convenience functions are missing. SAP BW vs. HANA is often discussed: HANA is used here as a high-performance database, whereas BW is based on providing structures, version management and governance. In practice, numerous enterprises combine the following approach: Core transactions run in S/4 (with Embedded Analytics for operational reports), and BW consolidates additional data for company-wide reporting and data mining.

Conclusion

For many enterprises, SAP Business Warehouse remains of great importance to turn data into valuable information and make well-founded decisions. As an Enterprise Data Warehouse solution, SAP BW provides sophisticated architecture with a number of functions for data management, analysis and reporting. At the same time, we are in the midst of change: New cloud solutions such as SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud show the way into the future. For decision-makers, this means finding the right balance – i.e. optimally using existing BW systems but also keeping an eye on the SAP BW roadmap (product strategy). Be it an upgrade to BW/4HANA (or BW/4HANA cloud options in the Private Cloud Edition) or initial access to cloud-based offers: It is important that the data strategy is oriented towards the business objectives. With the right planning, the necessary know-how (internal team or SAP BW consulting partners) and advanced tools, enterprises can make their data environment sustainable for the future.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

SAP BW denotes the classic Business Warehouse solution (e.g. NetWeaver BW 7.x), whereas SAP BW/4HANA is a later version optimized for SAP HANA. BW/4HANA does without old objects, is higher-performing and easier to operate but offers similar basic functions (data modeling, reporting) in advanced form. In short: SAP BW also runs on older technologies and is in maintenance mode; SAP BW/4HANA is the future-oriented further development with long-term support.

SAP BW offers interfaces for connecting external tools. SAP provides an OLE DB/OLAP-based driver that enables Microsoft Power Query (Excel) or Power BI to directly access BEx queries. This integration can be used by external applications to read data formatted in BW without having to reimplement the logic. In most cases, the installation of a suitable SAP driver or connector (e.g. SAP Analysis for Office or the Power BI Connector for SAP BW) is a prerequisite.

SAP Datasphere is SAP’s cloud succession solution for data warehousing. In comparison with classic BW, which runs on premise or as a private cloud, Datasphere is a completely managed cloud service. It enables faster onboarding of new data sources, self-service analyses and easier integration of advanced technologies (Big Data, AI). In perspective, SAP sees Datasphere as a strategic continuation of the BW concept in the cloud. Existing BW investments can partially be migrated via BW bridge to also enable a temporary use of SAP Datasphere and BW next to each other in hybrid scenarios.

BEx queries are the recommended layer for data query in SAP BW. Benefits: They centrally bundle complex calculations, business logic and authorizations in one place. A BEx query always provides users with consistent key figures and can use predefined filters and variables. Furthermore, the BEx layer enables a separation of back-end data model and front-end report – different tools (Excel, Web, third-party providers) can use the same query, which reduces redundant definitions and simplifies maintenance.

In the classic 7.5 Version, SAP BW will be supported by SAP until the end of 2027 (mainstream support) or 2030 (enhanced support). Security updates and legal adjustments will be carried out until then. SAP BW/4HANA as a newer product generation has a maintenance horizon until at least 2040 including regular innovations. In the long run, SAP recommends the changeover either to BW/4HANA or directly into the cloud (SAP Datasphere) as no classic BW maintenance is planned beyond 2030.

It depends on your requirements. With Embedded Analytics, SAP S/4HANA already offers numerous reporting options for current actual data within the ERP system. For purely operational analyses or real-time insights into individual business processes, this might be sufficient. However, as soon as consolidated analyses across several systems, archived datasets or complex data mart structures are required, a separate data warehouse is helpful. Here, either an SAP BW/4HANA On-Premise system or SAP Datasphere and/or SAP Business Data Cloud can be used.

In short: S/4HANA provides operational reports, BW (or successor) provides company-wide reporting and long-term analysis across all data.

In principle, classic SAP BW (NetWeaver BW) is an on-premise solution but can be operated on cloud infrastructure (e.g. in SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud or on hyperscalers as BW on HANA Cloud Deployment). With SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud, which have been built for the cloud from scratch, SAP offers a genuine software-as-a-service alternative. Moreover, BW/4HANA is available in managed cloud variants (e.g. in SAP Cloud ERP Private). Therefore, enterprises have the option of technically migrating BW into a cloud (BW PCE version) or immediately relying on the new cloud services (e.g. SAP Datasphere).

SAP offers official SAP BW training courses and certifications to train employees in handling BW, e.g. certificates for BW consultants (SAP Certified Application Associate – SAP BW/4HANA) or for BW/4HANA architecture and modeling can be obtained. SAP BW Certification proves practice-relevant know-how in data modeling ETL, query design and BW administration.

The classic front-end tools in the SAP BW environment are parts of the Business Explorer (BEx) Suite: BEx Analyzer (Excel-based), BEx Web Application Designer and BEx Web Analyzer, which were used for BW reporting in the past. Today, they are increasingly replaced by more advanced tools: SAP Analysis for Microsoft Office (an Excel add-in, successor of BEx Analyzer) and SAP Analytics Cloud for dashboards and ad hoc analyses. SAP Lumira Designer (for user-defined analytic applications) or SAP Crystal Reports can also access BW. The choice of the front end depends on the use case – reports close to Excel, interactive Web dashboards or pixel-accurate formal reports require different tools. All of them have in common that they rely on the consistent BW data basis.

SAP BW is a data management platform in the BI environment, whereas tools such as Power BI or Tableau are pure visualization and analysis tools. It is not “either – or” (no “rigid” SAP BW vs. Power BI): BW frequently forms the basis (data warehouse) and the reports are actually created in a front end (be it SAP tools such as SAC or Power BI etc.). In SAP terminology, BW used to be part of “SAP BI” for a long time. Therefore, “SAP BW vs. BI” is no contradiction: BW is a central part of BI architectures. Alternative solutions such as Snowflake or Azure Synapse might be attractive but require more integration effort for SAP ERP data. In the end, the decision should be made in the context of an overall strategy for business intelligence and data, where aspects such as existing infrastructure, data sources, user requirements and costs have to be considered.
